This is because worn out components can usually be re-welded or re-armoured without resulting in breakage or machine damage. The material is a cold work steel.
Due to the through-hardening process, there is a persistent hardness from the edge layer to the core. This ensures homogenous wear over the lifetime of the counter knife.
